Denny Nikolopoulos:
It is sad news to find out this way about my old trainer and friend Michael Olajide Sr. of Kingsway Boxing. I will never forget him. My heart goes out to Kay his wife who was and still is the Glue at Kingsway. ***I remember when Michael and Kay offered me a job there when I was jobless for a short time in my life and I will always be grateful. Although, I hardly knew Michael Olajide Sr. Sons Jr. and Tukunbo (who once refereed my fight) my heart goes out to them as well. ***I will also never forget the fun I had trying to teach Michael how to use a computer and the great stories he told me about the days when he was the West African Champion and the laughs when Kay use to mouth silently everything Michael Olajide would say. I'm sure going to miss him.
Deni Auclair:
Michael was always a true gentleman. Kind, gentle and softspoken. He has been missed these past few years, and will be doubly missed now that he is truly gone. His memory will live on in all those he touched through the years.

Richie Hill
Kenneth Washington:
Richie Hill was a good man that cared about the youth. Richie was holding it down in his sector of GOD's vineyard, making a difference. He will be thought about as well as missed. I am the son of George Washington from Bed Stuy Boxing, Richie and Big George are probably in Heaven talking about all the youth they shaped and molded. Thank you Daily News Golden Gloves for recognizing our Heros.
Al Gavin Jr.:
Richie and my Dad were coaches together in Wynn Center in Bklyn. They are coaches together in Heaven now. RIP Mr Hill.
Bernard Peterkin:
I remember Richie Hill when I was an boxer in the 1980's. Richie helped work my corner with Dep, my PAL coach. I could still hear Rich on my old fight tapes, yelling "Bernard work, keep working". I remember helping my old gym partner, Clinton Mitchell prepare for his pro debut, against Bernard Hopkins. Clinton won. I was his sparring partner. Being around Richie Hill made me proud of being a PAL boxer. ALWAYS. My son Travis also grew up in the PAL, first as a pre-school grad, then as an after school member as a child, and finally as a boxer. Thanks, Richie. A lot of people don't know how far we go back in the PAL program together. Rest in peace my brother.
Randy Brown:
You and Al Gavin were my coaches at Wynn Center PAL in Brooklyn, and you always said have patience and fun. Thanks for the guidance so early on, I will miss you. Rest for Richie.
David Cruz, Jr.:
Through the many years Richie did so many things for the sport, as well as what he could for all the boxing programs city-wide. I will always remember those special times and events we had at the Sunset Park Boxing Club. May you rest in Peace.
Sean Connolly:
Richie helped the the PAL Boxing Program grow into the success that it is now. He Always protected the Boxers and Coaches. The PAL Boxing Team is at a great loss. I remember on one of the trips to Atlanta he made sure that the Team visited Dr. Kings Memorial Site. It was important to him that the team would also learn and be educated on trips as well. He would always tell the young Boxers to relax and have fun during a bout or competition. All the hard work was done during training. Now it is your time to relax and have some fun Richie, with all of the hard work that you have done, there are multiple Champions through out boxing because of you. I will miss you.
Deni Auclair:
I knew Richie Hill for over 20 years. He was one of the kindest, calmest, and warmest coaches I've had the pleasure of dealing with in all of that time. He was a consummate gentleman with a keen, dry sense of humor. It was an honor to call him a friend.
Eddie Claudio:
Richie Hill was one stand up guy...always greeted you with a smile and hug...rest in peace big brother!
Dottie Raven:
Richie was the most gentle of men I ever had the pleasure or working with. He was a warm and respectful person who only had one thing in mind , the welfare of his boys that he worked with. I have neither seen nor worked around Richie in many years but I can say with certainty that I am sure that he remained that way. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and to the people at USA Boxing who I believe know they lost a good man.

John Stanley
Joe Higgins:
John always sat in the front seat at all the coaches clinics and asked all the
questions, although our coaches clinics certify our members for two years John
came to all of them. When I told him he only needed to come once every two years
he said "I know, but there's so much knowledge to learn, how else can I
serve my son properly." I will miss you on those JO trips, I'm so sorry
your dream of taking care of your family and starting a new beginning was taken
from you. You were a good man and Ideal member of USA Boxing Metro. Men like you
made me proud to serve as your President. Thank you. Joe Higgins
Antonio Midyette:
Rest in peace my man..is was a delight knowing you and reffing your sons during the years.
Eddie Claudio:
John Stanley will be missed dearly, it hurt me to my heart to hear such sad news, and knowing that was the last time we were together having a drink - Me, John and Vic. You will be truly missed, you're in God's hands. Peace, my brother!
Sean Connolly:
I had the honor and privilege of working with John at the PAL for many years.
He was a great coach and a great man. He had always put the boxers he coached
first. He always had pride and joy with what the boxers had achieved in the gym
and inside the ring. He would call and tell me what they have done. You could
always hear the smile in his voice. He would always take the time to make sure
that one was welcomed and loved inside the gym. He was always very proud of his
family. He will be truly missed inside and out of the boxing world. Rest in
peace brother.
Deni Auclair:
John always had a smile on his face and treated everyone with respect. He was
patient, kind and a top notch coach. I will especially miss the good cheer and
friendliness that he always carried with him. Just two weeks ago I was at
Gleason's doing registrations and he popped his head in just to say hello.
So hard to believe he's gone.

Lincoln Sanders
Antonio Midyette:
Linc was a very classy person, he had class beyond the stars everytime I talked
to him, he always had a smile that could cheer a person up and a coach and dear
friend to all his boxers. He will be missed, forever in my heart Antonio, god has
you now peace my friend.
Joe Higgins:
Linc goes as far back as I can remember, that commitment from him changed the lives of hundreds of youth that are better off today because of Linc. You have left a legacy, I'm glad I knew you. Rest in peace my brother. Joe Higgins, Freeport PAL
Eddie Haeffer:
I spent many years in the Westbury gym with him, we'll miss him greatly! RIP Linc.
Randy Brown:
I am saddened to read of his passing . Linc was a power of example for all
coaches, He knew how to communicate with people and never lose his own self
respect when things went wrong or a problem arised. You will be missed for
sure.. RIP.
George Sandas:
Linc was one of our original coaches at the Hempstead Boxing Club starting here 10 years ago. He was a great teacher and mentor for our young boxers. He coached 7 Golden Glove Champions, a Dozen Metro Champions, and coached our boxers when they decided to turn pro. There is now a hugh void within our club that will never be filled, for Linc was the heart and soul of the "Hempstead Boxing Club".
Padilla Boxing Club:
Rest in peace Linc. Thanks for your help and friendship.
Deni:
I knew Linc for many years. He was always calm, courteous and, in my eyes, the type of coach I would point to as a role model. He was a good man.
Tommy Rainone:
Linc, my 1st real trainer who taught me so much, just saw you a little over 2
weeks ago and wish I knew then it would be the last time, boxing has lost a
great teacher - rest in peace, Tommy R.
Eddie Claudio:
You was alright in my book, Linc, as a coach..you'll be truly missed!

Ronney "Venezuela" Vargas
Donations for the Vargas family can be made to USA Boxing, Metro, 300 Pelham Road, Apt. 5M New Rochelle, NY 10805.
Eddie Haeffer:
One of the most talented boxers I ever had the pleasure of watching. Charismatic and funny are just a few words to describe Venezuela...
What can you say, it's just not right, too young, too talented and too bright of a future. Many of us are really going to miss you!
Antonio Midyette:
When I first met Ronney was during the first Golden Glove tournament he fought in. I said to him keep doing what you doin and you will be a World Champion very soon. He looked at me and smile and then hugged me and said thank you. So our friendship continued on. You will be missed dearly. Love ya bro. God has you now you’re safe.
Raheem of bodybangers, Orin George, Yasin Rashid:
I KNEW VENEZUELA WELL, HE WAS A REAL NICE KID,RESPECTFUL WASN'T A BOASTER THOUGH HE HAD A LOT TO BOAST ABOUT , AN ANGEL WAS CALLED HE IS NOW AMONG THE PEACEFUL, MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE, AND GOD BE WITH HIS FATHER, BROTHER, AND ALL THAT WAS NEAR AND DEAR TO HIM. PEACE AND LOVE: IT'S A MATTER OF TIME FOR THOSE BASTARDS TO FACE JUSTICE.
Joe Higgins USA Boxing Metro President:
I have always admired the way Webster PAL would strut their stuff at all our events, they have always been the ultimate team here in NY over the last 20 years. When I had my first club show in Freeport back in 1997 I remember Ronney had more hair than body, but what I remember most was how he loved being part of our boxing family and how determined he was to be the best. To me he was the epitome of what Webster was all about. I was always greeted with respect and looked forward to seeing Venezuela. Sharing Local, Regional and National tournaments with Ronney and his cool style was a pleasure in my life that made it all worth it for me. I will never forget him because he was the type who would stick up for his brother, and all of us were his brothers. He was the guy you would want in your foxhole, that’s how tough he was. With Love & Much respect. Joe Higgins, USA Boxing Metro President
Eddie Claudio:
I must say that I was very fortunate to ref many of Ronney Vargas’ bouts as a JO and senior boxer. I always looked forward to his bouts being that he was so entertaining to watch and so talented. He was born to be a boxer without a shadow of doubt! He will truly be missed...Rest in peace CHAMP!
Mike Brooks:
RIP VENEZUELA... when I 1st started boxing 4 1/2 years ago my coach took me to the Webster PAL in the BX, I had very little experience going to war with the top gunz like Steve Martinez, Venezuela aka Ronney was always that dude in the ring where I was like "Damn" I gotta fight like him, and he was somebody who I praised for his tremendous skill, through the years we became cool and now he's gone. Imma miss u Venezuela, NY boxing is gonna be hurting for a while.
Andre Henry:
Ronney was the first person I ever fought. What a way to get introduced into boxing. In all he beat me all three times. He was a great boxer and an even better friend. No matter what he was doing he was always willing to give you his advice. He will be truly missed. May god bless the dead.
sincerly,
Andre Henry
Deni Auclair:
Ronney was a beautiful person, inside and out. He always had a quiet smile for everyone, but you could see the laughter in his eyes as he hung back from being the center of a conversation. A sweet boy, a sweet man, a great boxer, he will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a champ in the ring and out. My deepest sympathies to his immediate family and his extended family, including the boxers, coaches and officials from Webster PAL.
Giuseppe Penna:
My heart & soul goes out to victors family & immediate ones. I officited with victor on numerous occations. HE was the most HUMBLE MAN i've officiated with. Victor heped me alot officiating.I love you & I will miss you Victor.
Victor Babilonia
Our dear boxing colleague, Victor Babilonia, has passed away. He was loved and respected, not only in the Metro LBC, but all over the country, in part due to his dedication to the sport of boxing. Victor was born and raised in the country of Colombia. He came to the United States as a professional boxer and fought many well-known boxers of his era such as Alfredo Escalera and Terence Ali. When his pro carreer came to an end, he decided to give back to the sport he dearly loved by becoming an amateur official. During his years as an official, Victor was recognized by his peers as an outstanding referee by receiving numerous awards at the PAL, Golden Gloves, Junior Olympics, and other national tournaments. Victor also mentored upcoming officials, helping them achieve the standard of excellence he himself had reached.
Eddie Claudio:
Victor was one of a kind and those that knew him very well know that another Victor Babilonia will be hard to come by. May he rest in peace...we all love you brother!
Joe Higgins:
I always admired how smooth Victor was at officiating. He carried himself with a quiet dignity that was an example to others as he left a tremendous impression on me. He never failed to greet you with a smile and a friendly gesture. I always felt with his presence that all would go well in the ring. What impressed me most was the way the athletes felt when he worked their bouts. My own athlete, Mike Brooks, was so shocked by his death that he felt obligated to pay tribute to Victor without
my influence. R.I.P. Victor, you were one of a kind.
Prakash D Tuladhar, ALBA Official Nepal:
I was so shocked when I opened my computer to check the Golden Glove tournament. I just arrived yesterday (12 march) from my country, Nepal, after participating in the WBC convention held in Manila I didn’t drive, so Victor and Cristina tooked me to boxing shows and tournaments.
I would like to say on behalf of my country Nepal, too, we always will remember him as a boxing official hero.
Frank Burchette, Metro Vice President:
Victor Babilonia spent endless hours conseling me as to how to become a better coach coaching my athletes in this game of boxing. His infinite wisdom has served me well and as far as I'm concerned he lives on in me. You are with both Schavez Peters and myself at each and every bout as well as the athletes that will follow. Thanks for your friendship and pat of encouragement on the back that helped me to persevere.
Robert d'Angelo:
I was given a eight count when I read of his passing. I realy enjoyed working with Victor. He was the kind of person that you wanted to be with, in and out of boxing. Yes, I will miss seeing/talking with him. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest in peace with the LORD. May we meet again.
Jim Kinney, NJ LBC:
My sincerest condolences to Victor's family and the NY Metro LBC. I am sorry we lost such a great official and friend. I watched Victor as a new official and learned "how to do it right". He did possess a special quality in the ring. For that I am grateful to have had a chance to get to know him. God Bless, Jim Kinney NJ LBC
Andy Edell and Gail Prestia:
We loved Victor so very much. He was an excellent official and friend. We will miss him dearly. We always looked forward to seeing the other couple like us to work the shows. God bless always.
Ricky Gonzalez:
I always cherished the friendship we had. He gave me lots of advise and was truly a master at what he did in the ring. His elegance and knowledge in the ring will surely be missed. However, he will never be forgoten. God Bless you Victor.
Robin P. Taylor, USA Boxing Metro Co-Chief of Officials:
Victor Babilonia was part of our USABOXING Metro family. He will be truly missed by us all. Victor will live on in the kindness he showed, the joy he shared and the love he brought into our lives. May GOD comfort us with memories of him.
Sara Hatfield:
Victor will always have a special place in my heart. He refereed my last fight, and I always enjoyed saying hi to him at Gleason's. He was a prince among men and will be missed by so many.
Sherif Younan and Sugar Boy:
Victor, or Babilonia like I used to call him, was one of the nicest people that I ever knew. He was passionate about boxing and life itself. A great father and a great teacher, he taught me a lot since he was my trainer for four years. My son, Sugar Boy, was still a baby and used to come with me to the gym. He told me he would one day be a champion. He watched him grow and smiled when he said - I told you, look at him now.....
we will miss him a lot, we love you Babilonia.
Felipe Gomez - New Legend Boxing, Inc.:
My condolences goes out to his family. USA Boxing Metro has lost a very special person. He proved to be one of a kind official. He was a good mentor to everyone. He was fair and always cared for his boxers in the ring. He will be missed!!!
Carlos Ortiz:
Victor was a true gentleman. He was always a person you could count on for almost anything, especially if it had to do with boxing.Victor's love for boxing was exemplified in the manner inwhich conducted himself as an official of USA boxing.Victor you will always be missed. You have left avoid in all of our lives. May God be with you always.
Steve Willis:
One of the best technical referee's in the world, a fun guy on the road
his total smooth classic gentleman's style in the ring made us all
smile & watch Babbie.. I will miss our conversations in his broken
English & my bad Spanish lol with out missing a point..Victor Babilonia you
will not be forgotten.
Buddy Harrison:
I have been bringing boxers from Washington DC to New York for years now and the man has always treated us great. To him, it never seemed to matter where we were from. He treated us more than fair!

Pilar:
Victor Babilonia, whom I referred to in Spanish as "el Baby" was a
champion in my eyes. I never met anyone that was so full of life. He never
had a bad attitude or bad thing to say about anyone, on the contrary, he was a
very positive person. He was the most easy going and laid back person I ever
met, but yet, he also displayed confidence. I admired him in so many ways. I
never heard him complain about anything. He just took life in stride; he never
worried or fret. He was a beautiful person, besides being a child at heart and a
lot of fun to be around. He loved life, his children, vallenatos and boxing! He
was so passionate about boxing. That's how we met... I was his student whom
became his close friend. And I can attest that he was by far the best boxer,
instructor and referee this world has ever seen! He was disciplined, dedicated
and superior in his skill and craft. And as I mentioned, he was a champion in
every sense of the word. I will really miss Baby. But I!
will always carry with me the memories and all the things he taught me.
Though he has departed from this earth prematurely, my love for him will always
remain alive in my heart. May the Lord Jesus be with him and may his soul rest
in peace. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Victor Lahdo:
After having been away from amateur boxing for 4 long years getting married,
raising a family, building a home, etc., I was completely shocked and deeply,
deeply saddened to learn of this devastating news. We worked many national
tournaments together (with Eddie Claudio, Mike Rosario, et. al.), roomed
together, ate together, etc. Victor was very much admired by the top leadership
among officials in this nation by being a referee to emulate. I was there in
2000 when he won the outstanding referee at the USA Boxing JO National
Tournament in Marquette--it was earned, and truly deserved. I will miss you
very, very much and I am sorry that our sport has suffered this loss. But there
are awesome memories to cherish and it is because of winners like Victor
Babilonia that some of us continue in our sport. Rest brother...rest.
Durrel Joseph:
I've known Victor best for his last name Babilonia and from since I been training at Gleasons gym...He ref. the first fight that I won and he was always fair ith the boxers and he was a cool friendly guy that you would want to talk to. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL 'N' MAY HE REST IN PEACE...
